India's capital Rises to Hazardous Pollution Following Diwali

Tuesday brought inhabitants of the world's most polluted city encountered exposed to dangerously toxic air that registered in the "severe" category.

Alarming Air Quality Levels

Multiple areas of the city showed an AQI exceeding 500, which represents ten times the healthy level established by the WHO.

In some locations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1800, equating to 15 to 20 times exceeding healthy levels.

Firecracker Prohibition and Current Developments

Beginning in 2020, the government had enforced a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous smog that engulfs the city as colder weather sets in.

However recently, the recently formed local government appealed to the supreme court to propose a easing of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – previously questioned by environmental experts as being only about 30% lower impact – as a middle ground between "heritage and environment".

Court Decision and Reality

Despite concerns of medical and ecological campaigners, judicial authorities complied with the appeal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during specific time windows throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was widespread flouting of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with little regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.

Several monitoring devices throughout the city registered pollution peaking around the night hours to the most severe measurements recorded during celebrations in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Effects

The proliferation of fireworks during the festival also triggered a dispute with neighbouring Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on contaminants originating in India following the festivities.

Long-Standing Pollution Crisis

Extremely elevated readings of pollution in the capital have persisted as a significant challenge for over a decade and a half, with the condition showing no improvement.

During the festival period, the amount of hazardous particles in the air has been found to shoot up to significantly exceeding the most severe readings ever measured in Beijing, which was formerly considered as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Multiple Pollution Contributors

The situation in the city is resulting from a convergence of different contributors including transportation pollution, dust, construction activities, garbage fires and smoke from farm burning in neighbouring regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, agricultural workers regularly ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, generating hazardous haze that then gets trapped over the city as winter air arrives.

Health and Economic Consequences

Both financial and medical impact on the approximately 33 million inhabitants living in the Delhi area is significant, according to various investigations.

The contaminated air results in elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can even lead to malignancies.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be accounting for approximately 10k premature deaths each year in Delhi.
