Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Police say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Officers then discovered many other vandalized cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests suggest the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; authorities are presently not cognizant of any injuries in connection with the event," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the public for details.
A high-ranking representative stated the attack made him without words and had to be addressed quickly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the death of nine individuals by a shooter targeting people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
